The above sketches are based on a Laban performance entitled Me, Myself & I. During the beginning stages of the piece four dancers are all in unison, moving as if one entity. As the performance evolves the unity begins to fragment and element of individuality begins to surface, it is here where I have decided to base my sketches upon.

Currently working on a series of small square drawings that are abstract in form. In them I'm attempting to encourage the viewer into questioning what could lie beyond the canvas, beyond the drawn line.

Work generated for the brief originally stemmed from producing a series of notes brainstorming initial relationships and ideas based on the brief. I had discussed with Laura that these pieces could be uploaded onto 12-Pages blog as works in progress. However it was later discovered that this aided the narrative for the three pieces of work.

In Altered States I had become interested in exploring redundant acts that have aspirations to create and inform change.

For the best part of this year I've been working on the Residue series which explores the juxtaposition of contained gestures within abstract forms. Later works grew into creating two layers featuring ghostly geometric shapes, the Pallid series.

A single drawing from the Pallid series would act as signifier of information distributed, unable to reach it intended audience.

Founding member, Co-Director and this year’s curator of the Staff Art Show at the National Portrait Gallery, Beverley Bennett, commissioned fellow creatives to follow the brief ‘Radicals’ in conjuction with the 12-Pages Online Project Space.

Exhibitors were asked to take inspiration from sitters within the collection located in Room 18, Art Invention and Thought: The Romantics, which features the likes of William Godwin, Lord Byron, John Constable and William Blake.

As the project evolved, participants began to move away from the chosen theme by selecting new or existing work. In doing so, individuals emerged to become Non-Conformists, free-thinking Radicals. For more information visit radicalsartshow.blogspot.com.

Octavia Estelle Butler (June 22, 1947 – February 24, 2006) was an American science fiction writer, one of the best-known among the few African-American women in the field.
She won both Hugo and Nebula awards. In 1995, she became the first science fiction writer to receive the MacArthur Foundation Genius Grant.
In 1979, she published Kindred, a novel that uses the science-fiction concept of time travel to explore slavery in the United States.

The Drawing Center’s Viewing Program offers emerging artists the opportunity to include their work in a curated Artist Registry that is consulted by a wide variety of arts professionals from across the globe: curators, gallerists, collectors, and educators, among others.

Approximately twice a year The Drawing Center presents “Selections,” group exhibitions of artists curated from the Viewing Program, to give exposure to emerging artists.

TBC Artists' Collective has now announced an open call for submissions to its June 12-Pages Projects. Applicants are asked to make a new artwork in response to the theme of 'RADICALS'.

The Regency era spawned a group of revolutionary artists, writers and thinkers including Thomas Paine, Mary Shelley, Mary Wollstonecraft, William Blake and Lord Byron - who became known as the Radicals. It was a period in British history where opinions were voiced and artistic expression was at a level never witnessed before.

For this brief you are asked to consider modern day 'radicals' spanning the last 20 years. Work created can be a homage, reference, quote, or interpretation.

Submissions should incorporate elements of drawing processes within finished outcomes, with an emphasis on your chosen radical.
The notion of 'radical' can be as rigid or as loose as you feel comfortable with.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Send all images as JPEGs, minimum 72-maximum 150dpi, min 400Kb, max 1Mb
Send all text documents as .doc, unless presented as a 'drawing' or 'image' in PDF format. Limit body text to 3,000 words

Slice, a Pakistani–UK collaboration, curated by Fatima Hussein and Scale

TBC Artists' Collective have today been commissioned to produce work for SLICE, a Pakistani–UK collaborative website and accompanying exhibitions in London and Lahore curated by Fatima Hussein, artists and co-director of Other Asias, and Scale, the collaborative arts project run by artists and theatremakers Simon Daw and Paul Burgess. SLICE aims to encourage dialogue between two diverse cultures by linking communities in both countries via the creation of a new artwork that enters into dialogue with the social and physical fabric of two iconic, complex and historically linked cities. Ten artists from London and ten from Lahore have been commissioned to participate in SLICE.

TBC members Beverley Bennett, Charley Peters, Laura Davidson and Paul Mendez will produce a collaborative work for the project, which will be exhibited in both cities on online. The group members will also participate in two international web conferences.

The exhibition dates are as follows:

I came across Steve Reich's work a while ago, but consciously decided to really listen to his compositions when Timothy Knights reintroduced me to him last year. The repetitive, complex arrangements, yet minimalistic music he creates evokes a emotional response that lyrics cannot express.
His use of phrasing has been described as a kaleidoscope that is gradually shifting. 'Four Organs' and 'Drumming' are examples of 'movement' that I find rather exciting in relation to the current 12-Pages brief.

Beethoven / 5:17 / Chopin

I decided to based my research on music. Namely classical music, Beethoven's Egmont, Op. 84: Overture in F Minor and Chopin's Nocturne No.1 in B-Flat minor, Op. 9, No. 1.
By layering the two sets of music to play seamlessly together, I later documented its output via an equalizer. There, the visual compositions were made.
I'm hoping to develop further on this series. Perhaps to produce hand rendered drawings as opposed to digital.

Development has started on increasing the scale of the Residue series, as seen above. However, I found I had to adapt my methodology of creating such works to fit a larger scale. This resulted in forming a pool of grey pastel remains upon the studio floor.

Grey. Grey just has a clear-cut character, it does not unleash emotions or associations, grey is really neither visible nor invisible. Grey is, by virtue if its neutrality, so eminently suited to act as a mediator, to clarify, just as illustionistically as a photograph. And it is better than any other colour for clarifying 'nothingness'.

The above quote by Richter maybe true when it comes to the act of painting however, this truth maybe not lend itself to the act of drawing. There are two such occasions within the 'Residue' series where grey refuses to sit in the confines that Richter has decided to place it in. Firstly emotions are highlighted by gestural act, the movement of the pastel upon a surface. Secondly 'nothingness' is depicted by the paper of which grey lays upon.

'A Message to...' an intervention project where TBC members researched and created a piece of work based around those who have influenced the city of Oxford.
Richard Baker (born 1972) is a British composer and conductor, known equally for his own highly charged and distinctive music and for his performances of contemporary music, especially the music of his contemporaries in the UK.

Version 1, Version 2 and Outcome are a merger between an original drawings created for the project and the materials used to create it. Baker's composition entitled Los Rabanos influenced the piece.

Exhibition News: Process at Arena Gallery, Liverpool

The exhibition Actions at The Bluecoat in January of this year introduced London-based artist Beverley Bennett to Liverpool. Her work incorporates principles of erasure,memorability and gesture in delicate pieces constructed from torn paper and pins, and equally in gestural yet diagrammatic drawings that have been said to recall Constructivism.

In fact, these drawings are simply born of a desire to fully explore what drawing is and what it can be, which is why although she is by no means a performance artist, Bennett describes her work as more than just an end result on paper. She sees her creative process as a series of “acts of play that evolve into ritualistic, performative, labour intensive actions, generating a greater understanding of the processes of making, allowing the 'visual' to become secondary.”

In response to this, Process presents Bennett’s creative ritual as more than mere preparation. It introduces the process as a truly engaging element of her body of work and re-establishes its place at the forefront of her practice. To do this, another creative process is used. A newly commissioned film by documentary filmmaker Timothy Knights shows a labour-intensive artistic representation of Bennett’s studio ritual, the film gives as much insight into Knights’ creative process as Bennett’s. As the viewer engages with the film, the awkward angle at which they are forced to watch leaves a physical memento of the exhibition; a strain that empathises with the exertion of Bennett’s process as they engage with her new and existing work.

Showroom is a new section that showcases interesting up-coming artists. First up is a Beverley Bennett, a recent graduate that makes intricate marks on paper with ink and brush. The effect is similar to that of deciphering doodles, witnessing a mind wend its journey. At the same time, there is such space and air around the marks that there is also time to let your own mind wander. The work is also sculptural in feel. Some pieces are made 3d by way of securing delicate slithers of paper to the wall with pins. The work feels at once precious and yet transient, like one breath could take it away. Lovely. Beverley’s piece Interruptions illustrates this month’s article ‘Soul Speak in 8 Parts’.

How would you describe your creative process?

Labour intensive and sense of discovery. I say discovery as I don’t really have a clear sense of what may be produced although the process I adopt is repetitive yet ritualistic

The ability to allow happy accidents and ritualistic tendencies to occur through play while staying focused.

How would you like your work to make others feel?

To feel drawn to it yet slightly disturbed on closer inspection.

Agnes Martin, Kara Walker, Chris Ofili, Annette Messager, Franicis Alys, Sophie Calle, John Hillard, Duane Michels, Sonia Boyce – There are quite a few! Individual? It would have to be my mom. Scar is a piece of work inspired by her (first image)

Gaylene is a writer, broadcaster, coach and project consultant. She has worked in the international cultural sector for twenty years and has programmed and produced across every artform and media. She has worked with a range of international organisations including the Toronto International Film Festival, British Film Institute, FILMCLUB, the Museum Service, Hot Docs Film Festival, and the Arts Council England. She has also directed documentaries for television and is a regular contributor to BBC Radio 4’s flagship art show Front Row. She offers coaching sessions and workshops including, most recently, for the Step Change programme at the National Theatre and Royal Opera House. She is an experienced project director and established the Underground Railroad network to support and profile black British artists and creative entrepreneurs. She is a published writer, has lectured extensively and is currently working on her first novel, The Sacrifice. She is Faculty Member of The School of Life and a 2009/10 Clore Fellow.

Beverley Bennett’s practice revolves around the act of drawing and the perpetual possibilities it possesses. Acts of play evolve into ritualistic, performative, labour intensive actions that generate a greater understanding of the processes of making, allowing the 'visual' to become secondary. Current works incorporate principles of erasure, memorability and gesture. The use of ‘diagrams’ used by Bennett intensify the sense of a matter of fact and immediate recognition due to the characteristics of geometry used.

Bennett's work has been shown nationally; venues include the Bluecoat, Liverpool (2010) Actions curated by Sonia Boyce, and Global Studio's (2010) and The National Portrait Gallery, London (2009) Hidden Talents.

Bennett is also the founding member of London-based art collective TBC, who self-publish a magazine, 12 Pages, and work on exhibition projects that interrogate individual members’ creative identities and explore the potential of collaborative works. The group is currently producing a group exhibition Delineation, Contemporary Dialogues with Drawing, which will open in late 2010 in London in association with The Big Draw.

Sonia Boyce, pioneer in the Black British cultural renaissance of the 1980s returns to the Bluecoat 25 years after first exhibiting here with new work Like Love Parts One & Two including a collaboration with Blue Room and Action her selection of emerging artists Beverley Bennett, Appau Boakye-Yiadom, Robin Deacon and Grace Ndiritu.

Boyce has also been invited to curate the Bluecoat’s other gallery spaces in recognition and celebration of her first exhibition at the Bluecoat in 1985 and her inclusion in Tate Liverpool’s Afro Modern: Journeys through the Black Atlantic exhibition, which opens the same time as Like Love. Her selection, entitled Action, will showcase emerging artists whose themes, issues and approaches contrasts with the platform of ideas presented by a generation 25 years ago. The artists Boyce has chosen are Beverley Bennett, Appau Boakye-Yiadom, Robin Deacon and Grace Ndiritu.

Sonia said: “I am no longer the central attention in the work I make. Increasingly over the past decade, I have involved the participation of other people. I usually ask them to perform for me and use their responses as the basis for the artworks. Like Love is about my engagement with two communities: a school for young parents in Bristol, and an art group that meets weekly at the Bluecoat consisting of adults with learning difficulties and their carers. In both instances I have used their words and their actions.

“The Action exhibition I am curating allows me to explore my own concerns about the depictions of performative actions in art. And with the four artists I have chosen, the object of their attention is not on depicting themselves.“For example, Beverley Bennett’s subtle artworks become evidence of her interaction with the medium of drawing and then the audience becomes witness.”

The performative element is carried on through the rest of the Bluecoat's gallery space in the work of three young artists selected by Boyce.
"It's such an important reflection of the work we do here at the Bluecoat," reflects Parsons.
"We thought it would be interesting to look at young black artists who are just emerging, in a similar position to the one Sonia would have been in 25 years ago, and see what the difference is now."

The artists chosen are Beverley Bennett, Appau Boayke-Yiadom, Robin Deacon and Grace Ndiritu, whose themes, issues and approaches contrast with the platform of ideas presented by Sonia's generation of artists.

Even bigger?

I have gone even bigger thanks to using roll paper, the biggest piece being 1.5 m x 2.5m. Apparently I could go larger still. But bigger paper means longer time scale, I have no idea when they will be completed, especially the 'Breakdown' piece, which will hopefully be as detailed as the smaller version.

Breakdown

I'm currently working on a project based on ones mental state while using prescribed medication. I'm hoping to produce a triptych to show the journey.
As I've stated previously the medium that I would constantly turn to when producing work would be photography, however while working on this 'mapping' project I stumbled upon a pen and paper and unconsciously I started to draw.
